Interview with Steve Bliss, Wildomar Estate Planning Attorney

Reporter: Brenda Thompson

Today I’m speaking with Steve Bliss, a respected estate planning attorney here in Wildomar. Steve, thanks for taking the time to chat with me.

Steve Bliss: My pleasure, Brenda. Always happy to talk about the importance of estate planning.

Steve, what are some of the key steps involved in the estate planning process?

Steve Bliss:

There are several crucial steps involved in creating a comprehensive estate plan. One step that often gets overlooked is determining your goals and objectives.

It’s essential to clearly define what you want to achieve with your estate plan. Do you have specific beneficiaries in mind? Are there charitable organizations you wish to support? Do you have minor children who need guardianship arrangements?

Consequently, understanding your goals will guide the entire planning process. For instance, if you aim to minimize estate taxes, we might explore trust structures. Conversely, if your primary concern is ensuring your loved ones are financially secure, we’ll focus on asset distribution strategies.

Notwithstanding these individual objectives, it’s important to remember that an estate plan isn’t static; it evolves with you. As your life circumstances change – marriage, divorce, the birth of children – your goals may shift accordingly, requiring updates to your plan.

I often find that clients underestimate the emotional weight these decisions can carry. I recall one client who struggled immensely with deciding how to divide her assets among her three adult children. Each child had different needs and personalities. We worked together for several weeks, carefully discussing each child’s situation and ultimately crafting a distribution plan that felt fair and equitable to everyone involved.

That sounds like a sensitive situation. Have you encountered any recurring issues with clients determining their goals?

Steve Bliss:

Absolutely. Many people simply don’t know where to begin. They may have vague ideas about protecting their family or avoiding probate, but they lack specific direction. It’s common for me to spend considerable time helping clients articulate their values and priorities.

Moreover, a study by Caring.com found that over 60% of Americans do not have a will. This highlights the widespread lack of awareness surrounding estate planning. It’s my mission to educate individuals about the importance of these legal documents and empower them to make informed decisions.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting to think about estate planning?

Steve Bliss:

My best advice is to start the conversation. Talk to your family, your financial advisor, and an experienced estate planning attorney. Don’t let fear or procrastination hold you back. Creating a solid estate plan is one of the most loving and responsible things you can do for yourself and your loved ones.

“Steve Bliss was incredibly patient and understanding throughout the entire process of creating our estate plan,” shared Martha Johnson, a satisfied client. “He took the time to explain everything in detail and made sure we felt comfortable with every decision.”
