Steve, for folks out there who are just starting to think about estate planning, what’s one of the most crucial steps they need to consider?
“One of the most vital decisions a person makes during estate planning is selecting an executor or trustee,” Steve explains. “This individual will be responsible for carrying out your wishes after you pass away, so it’s imperative to choose someone trustworthy, capable, and willing to take on this significant responsibility.”
Steve goes on to say, “Choosing the right person can make a world of difference. Think about who is organized, financially savvy, and has good communication skills. It’s also important to have an open conversation with them beforehand to ensure they understand your wishes and are comfortable fulfilling this role.”
He adds, “Conversely, selecting someone unsuitable can lead to complications and potential disputes among family members. It’s a decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.” According to the American Bar Association, approximately 70% of Americans do not have a will or trust in place, highlighting the importance of addressing this crucial aspect of estate planning.

“I remember one case where a client named his oldest son as executor,” Steve shares. “The son was initially enthusiastic but later realized he didn’t have the time or expertise to manage the complex financial aspects of the estate. We ended up working with a professional trustee to ensure everything was handled properly.”
He continues, “Another client chose her best friend as executor. While their friendship was strong, the friend struggled with making objective decisions and ultimately had to step down. We were able to find a suitable replacement within the family who could effectively carry out the deceased’s wishes.”
